A Summary Of the Defrauded Man’s Story

In 2020, a man decided to put all his retirement savings and pension, amounting to a whopping six-figure sum, into a sophisticated cryptocurrency investment platform. He neither suspected that this platform was a scam nor did it ever occur to him that the fraudsters behind it would later defraud him.

Before beginning to engage with the group, a decision that would mark the beginning of his financial woes, the retired civil servant had come across an ad on the internet. After watching it several times, he became 100 percent convinced that it was better to invest his funds than let them sit idle in his bank account.

The Northern Irish man admitted, in an interview, that the ad looked convincing, as it seemed to have been endorsed by two celebrities that members of the public know very well. This is a textbook example of what we call “deep fake technology

He further confessed that though he did not know how cryptocurrency worked, he had heard about it before. The man additionally pointed out that he had no single doubt about the entity because of the following reasons:

  • One, the company had a credible-looking website.
  • Two, it assigned him a personal client manager who addressed all his queries and concerns satisfactorily one-on-one, over the phone, as opposed to online.

£250 Initial Deposit

Without suspecting anything or noticing any red flags, the victim initially deposited 250 pounds, which, in fact, yielded good returns.

After a few months of trading and experiencing both profits and losses, but mostly profits, the company invited him to purchase its purported retirement plan. Convinced that it was the right financial plan for him at that point, he confidently pumped in an additional six-figure sum, hoping to reap greater returns.

Man Finally Comes To The Realization That He Has Been Defrauded

Just a few weeks after depositing the money, the man painfully discovered that it was all gone. For several weeks, he tried to reach out to the company seeking an explanation for what had happened, pleading with them to return even just a portion of the funds. But the fraudsters would hear none of it, taking him in circles until eventually blocking him.

Left deeply devastated not only emotionally but also financially, he had to look for another job post-retirement. Meanwhile, the authorities in charge of this case worked round the clock, making their greatest efforts to track down and catch the scammers.

A Multi-Agency Team Finally Catches The Criminals

The police, through a collaborative multi-agency effort with the UK National Trading Standards(NTS) finally caught the scammers in 2024. Through the intervention of these entities alongside the Financial Ombudsman Service(FOS), the guy was able to recover a good amount of his stolen funds.

For starters, the UK NTS is a governmental entity that operates under the guidance and funding of the UK government. Its core mandate is to protect consumers and ensure fair trading. Similarly, in case you didn’t know, the FOS is a UK government agency. Its main task is to address financial disputes between parties impartially and fairly.

As you can see from this story, you can actually recover your funds from a scammer who defrauded you. It takes finding a trustworthy scam recovery service that will work with the appropriate authorities to pursue your case and do everything legally possible to catch the criminals.
